WHAT IS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE?

Landscape architecture is more than designing where the plants and trees are going to be placed on
a piece of property.  Entrance into the profession requires advanced education, training, licensure in
all but five states and specialized skills.  Landscape Architecture is one of the most misunderstood
professions.  Many building professions still do not know, how and when to use a landscape architect
and prospective clients often select the wrong profession for certain tasks.

It's not about "greening up the property".  A landscape architect barely spends 5% of their college study
time in plant material studies for a five year B.L.A. program in North America.  This is another reason
why we are heavy on education at Cascadia Design Build and why we particularly address the lay
person.  Please read our blogs for more:

       ACTIVITIES OF A LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

Landscape architecture is about “the site’ and about all aspects of how people and
wildlife “behave through spaces”.  Generally it combines earth sciences and human
       behavior studies.

         -  Design & planning to ensure sustainable land use
         -  Evaluating and designing traffic patterns in and out of the property
         -  Designing to position buildings and landscapes in relation to the sun and seasonal
            patterns
         -  Integrating into the design how people are going to use the land and facilities
         -  Creation of public parks and parkways
         -  Site planning for corporate office buildings
         -  Designing of residential landscapes and gardens
         -  Management of large wilderness areas or reclamation of degraded landscapes
            (i.e.mines or landfills)
         -  Consulting with the builders to totally integrate the building, landscaping, human flow
and and use on the property to ensure a pleasing, ergonomic sustainable result
